Day 1

We depart from Panama City early in the morning, shortly after breakfast, on the Pan-American Highway towards Colombia.  Along the way, we will stop for a short lunch break.  Once we enter the Darien province, the paved road ends and we begin the rough 4X4 terrain.   Later, we will board piragua (dug-out canoes) to the Wounaan Village of Boca de Lara.

The Wounaan are very curious about us, just as we are about them, and will tend to hang around to observe and see the newcomers.  By the end of the afternoon, we will visit the village and the neighboring rainforest on foot with a local Indian guide.  We will depart by piragua down the mangrove to see this very unique ecosystem.  Some of the birds that you may observe here are: pelicans, ibis, herons, frigates and kingfisher.  At low tide, you will be invited to join the community at fishing. Overnight at Dossi Lodge (L, D)

We explore the “Mirador”.  Our trek through the rainforest will bring us up close to some of nature’s most amazing flora and fauna.  Our Indian guide will also show us some of the interesting herds they use and WHY!
